Learning CW with the CW Machine by IK0YGJ

Carlo Consoli, IK0YGJ, a well known and highly accomplished CW operator, has used the CW Machine for a while now, and he liked it so much that he decided not only to produce a video clip showing it in combination with his Intrepid bug, but also to write an addendum to his book, Zen And The Art of Radiotelegraphy, to reflect the unique capabilities of the CW Trainer.  This guide to learning CW will be a part of the documentation that comes with the CW Trainer package. CW Machine Version 3.7.28

The calendar logic has been modified to cover a larger time span.  So far, the calendar ran from 2001 through 2069, and imported log records from other logging programs with a 2-digit year in the range of 70-99 were treated as 1970-1999.  The calendar can now be set to any year from 2000 through 2099, and imported log records can have a date ranging from 1901 through 2099. If you have log records from other programs which go back before 2001, please import them again with the CW Machine Manager. Take a look at the updated documentation:

CW Machine Version 3.7.25

The Tunig button in the CW Machine Manager now has functions for both, key-down and pulse tuning (use a right mouse click for pulse tuning). An additional <dm> ( = Esc ) command, D, lets you cycle through the LCD display options in operational mode without touching the joystick.Take a look at the updated documentation:

CW Machine Version 3.7.20

Two more commands have been added to the repertoire that can be entered with the <dm> pseudo prosign or after the Esc key on a directly attached keyboard: S and W let you toggle between CW and SSB modes. This way, it becomes even easier to use the CW Machine as a logging device in mixed-mode operation.  Take a look at the updated documentation:

CW Machine Version 3.7.19

A directly attached keyboard now lets you enter commands which are the equivalent of the <dm> pseudo prosign that you use with your paddle, i.e., you can change the band and activate the tuning modes with key combinations, and you don’t have to touch the CW Machine itself.  As part of this enhancement the function of the Esc key on the keyboard has changed. Take a look at the updated documentation:

CW Machine Version 3.7.18

The pseudo prosign <dm> now, in addition to changing the band setting, also lets you activate the tuning and pulse tuning functions with your paddle.  The typical operational functions can now all be accomplished without touching the device or having it connected to a computer. Take a look at the updated documentation:

CW Machine Version 3.7.14

A new pseudo prosign, <dm>, lets you change the band setting by just using your paddle.  This is for situations where you don’t have a computer running the CW Machine Manager, and when it’s impractical to use the menu function of the device (like in mobile operation). Take a look at the updated documentation:

CW Machine Manager Version 3.7.15

A new option on the Users screen lets you save all user profiles and other configuration settings to a file for backup purposes.  This also allows you to transfer all settings to another computer.  Take a look at the updated documentation:

USB Serial Adapter

The CW Machine connects to a computer through a standard RS232 serial port.  However, many computers, especially laptops, do not have “native” serial ports any more. Many inexpensive USB-serial adapters cause problems with the CW Machine, and we have normally recommended the Keyspan adapters for use with the CW Machine.  One other adapter has proven to work as reliably as the Keyspan models, and we are glad that we can offer you this adapter with your purchase of the CW Machine now.  The drivers for this adapter will be provided on the CW Machine installation CD.
